1. Installation context
In 2023, MITA Cooling Technologies received a request from one of India’s largest textile groups, based in the Punjab region. The group, which started with a single yarn production unit, has grown to become a leading producer of terry towels and bed linen, serving millions of customers in more than 100 countries and diversifying into the paper, chemical and energy sectors.
The customer’s main need was an efficient cooling system for wastewater from production, which is characterized by both chemical and mechanical criticality: the cooling fluid, in addition to having a significant presence of suspended solids, needed considerable thermal abatement, from 51°C to 32°C, with a required thermal power of about 8.5 MW.
2. Proposed solution
MITA Cooling Technologies proposed the installation of two open circuit cooling towers, model PME 4804 E CONT GSS, specifically designed for long-distance transportation to India.
These towers, in the Container version, were chosen to facilitate logistics and reduce delivery time. The towers are equipped with a Splash-type GSS exchange pack, which is ideal for handling the load of suspended solids in the fluid, thus ensuring effective heat removal even under conditions of high impurity concentration. The tower’s fiberglass structure and AISI 304 metal components make the installation resistant even to the corrosive conditions of the water used.
To facilitate maintenance and optimize uptime, the towers are equipped with removable walls, allowing easy access for internal inspections and possible exchange pack replacement. This structural choice simplifies cleaning operations, a major advantage for a textile plant operating with very dirty process fluids.
3. Results and key success factors
The installation of the PME 4804 E CONT GSS cooling towers enabled the customer to achieve the desired cooling goals by lowering the water temperature to 32°C and maintaining stable operation despite the high presence of suspended solids in the fluid. Some key factors of the project’s success can be listed.
– Technical specificity: the towers were specifically designed to handle wastewater with high density of suspended solids, thanks to the “Splash” exchange pack.
- Existence of materials: the choice of materials such as fiberglass and AISI 304 stainless steel ensures the durability of the structures even in the presence of chemically aggressive water.
- Ease of maintenance: removable walls make it possible to drastically reduce maintenance and cleaning time, improving operational efficiency.
- Logistical efficiency: the Container configuration facilitated transportation and installation, reducing delivery time and ensuring relatively rapid deployment.
This project is an example of how MITA Cooling Technologies can respond to the specific needs of industrial customers around the world, combining technological innovation and attention to practicality to ensure durable and efficient cooling solutions in complex settings such as the textile industry.
