What principle is exploited by open- and closed-circuit cooling towers?
Both open-circuit and closed-circuit towers exploit a very efficient, simple operating principle that has been known for years: the evaporative principle, according to which the forced evaporation of a small amount of water causes a lowering of the temperature of the main body of water. Not surprisingly, cooling towers are also called "evaporative towers" or "evaporative cooling towers".
